Trigger warnings: Rape and self-harm
This book was very problematic to me. First off, we started with Abby moving in with her aunt after her mom died. Her cousin, Beth, just hates her gut. Like REALLY HATE her. Beth is in a relationship with one of the "KINGS" in her high school.
The KINGS are your typical group in most bully romances that supposedly enforces the law like the concept of consulting adults is preposterous. The mighty KINGS are very fair that they won't do anything to Abby unless she does some wrongdoings with any of the student body. So Beth decides to cut her cheek and frame Abby for it.
The KINGS assigned Kent (as in the K in Kings. This group of friends just happen to spell kings with their initials. OMFG) to torture her and get Beth the revenge she deserves.
There's a lot of assumptions made in this book by characters that are just very annoying. No proper flow of writing, tbh. The characters are all detectives, they just know things at a glance. They must work in a department like the ones in Criminal Minds. Here are some ridiculous sleuthing they uncovered after witnessing/seeing things only once.
*Abby seeing Seth in her first week at that school and she goes: Interestingly, he seemed to avoid blondes. I could sniff out a story there. I would bet there was a blonde ex? One, who broke his heart? =Can't Seth just have a type?
*Kent cornering Abby in the library and she started shaking. Here are Kent's thoughts: I took her face in my hands and held her gaze. Shock prevented her from screaming for help. Even though I looked her straight in the eyes, I had the feeling she was somewhere else. Then it suddenly all made sense. Of course. How could I have not seen that right away? She had been raped. =See how problematic that is? Then he still went on to treat her so badly. He made her do things he wanted.
*Bonnie, Kent's ex-fuck buddy, met Abby at a party when Kent had to leave her for a KINGS' meeting. Bonnie then says, "...You are no liar. But you hide things. Secrets. You always wear long sleeves. If I took a guess, I'd say you cut." It's a very sensitive topic that you can't just ask people about it.
Sorry, this didn't work out for me. I knew too many people with this trauma and it's just not handled well in this book.
This was a free arc from BookSirens that I willingly read and reviewed.
