I actually really enjoyed this book, after reading it a second time.

spoilers.

The book starts off with a flashforward. New York's sweetheart Elizabeth Holland is dead, with her funeral on the same day as her wedding date to the handsome, wealthy bachelor, Henry Schoonmaker.

Elizabeth is a good mannered, polite girl...or so everyone thinks. Her father, who had died recently, has left her family with financial trouble. To keep her family's good name, she must marry Henry Schoonmaker. Instead, Elizabeth is in love with her family's coachman, Will. She often sneaks off at night to meet with Will during the book.

Will and Elizabeth have been childhood friends but recently their relationship has turned romantic. Will has always been a little jealous of Henry. Through Lina, Will hears Henry is engaged to Elizabeth. Will soon gives Elizabeth an ultimatum. Either stay here or come with him to California. He promises that whatever her decision is, he will always love her.

[Caro]Lina is one of Elizabeth's maids. She was previously a childhood friend of Elizabeth, though the relationship between them has soured. One of the reasons include the fact that Lina is in love with Will. Lina is extremely jealous that Elizabeth has attracted Will. Part of Lina feels that if she were society's lady like Elizabeth, she would have Will's heart. When she is fired, she goes off and tells Penelope Hayes everything she knows about Elizabeth and Will's affairs in return for revenge and money.

Penelope Hayes is Elizabeth's best friend. She has always had a competitive nature. Before the engagement, news circulated that Henry was going to propose to her. Now that Henry's engagement with Elizabeth is public, Penelope is left embarrassed and angry. There's always been some tension between her and Elizabeth [who's family is the richest?],but nothing has ever angered Penelope like this. She will go to any depths to gain revenge.

Henry Schoonmaker, the sexy bachelor, can always be found in the papers. He is known for going from girl to girl, getting drunk, and ,recently, dropping out from Harvard. To his father, Henry is a disappointment. An embarrassment. Henry's father wants to enter politics, but to do this he must get Henry settled down and married. He tells Henry he must marry Elizabeth, or he will be disinherited. But it's not Elizabeth Holland that Henry's in love with. It's her younger sister, Diana Holland.

Diana Holland is Elizabeth's younger, rebellious sister (as rebellious as a girl in the 19th century can be). She's always saying the most disrespectful things, and when she's not speaking, she's reading romantic novels. She's desperately seeking a more romantic life, a life complete opposite of her sister. She kisses many to find the spark, but only manages to find it with Henry, her sister's fiancée.

Good book for teens if you like drama. Don't read if you find details and history boring.

I like it. But some stuff doesn't make sense. The continents all disappear except N.A? That would never happen. It's a virus? Like the flu? So no cure or shot? Or is it a mutation?

And Linden is weird. I can't sympathize with him at all! He impregnated a thirteen year old!

Whatever, I guess the book was good enough.
