Systemic: How Racism is Making Us Sick by Layal Liverpool

Illuminating and academic delve into systemic racism in an accessible way. This book challenges readers to think critically and evaluate the world around them, to see and identify racism in science, research, and treatment in the medical field. Racism is so pervasive, that the manifestation in medical care is a result of living in a white supremacist society that refuses to change. This book is a must-read for everyone, even if you are uninvolved in the medical field. There is so much for everyone to learn, from understanding the existing stereotypes and barriers that Black people, and other people of color, face when they need healthcare, to understanding where these originate and continue to perpetuate in research and scientific spaces. Anyone working, or with an understanding of, science and research in any field will benefit from this book and should also look at their own institutions/fields to reflect.

Illuminating book on the toxic side of the fashion industry. People regularly discuss the quantity of fast fashion, and fashion trends in general, but the quality and “what’s in it” side isn’t as prominent. This book was incredibly informative on that side of the conversation and I’m glad it ended with both personal actions and systemic actions that can be taken to try and mend the industry & issues.

Fascinating and informative exploration into the world of octopuses! “Soul of the Octopus” is one of my favorite books, Sy is a fantastic writer who evokes such love and compassion through her books. This one is no different.
I love all of the research that is shared in this book, a great insight into so many different avenues of studying and understanding a species. I love how researchers are highlighted but also aquarists and other octopus enthusiasts who aren’t necessarily experts in the field of science, but experts in their own ways. The individual information profiles on different species is also a great addition to the book.
The images in this book are STUNNING!! I also love the reminders of how we don’t need to relate to an animal to care for them and how important compassion is. Empathy comes from knowledge and I think this book does a wonderful job showing that.

This book is a wonderful dive into physics & the universe!
Physics was not a strength of mine in academia, but it was a course I greatly enjoyed. I can say the same for this book! The writing grabbed my attention immediately and captivated me. I had so much fun reading this! Fun! While reading about physics! I think this is a great book to conceptualize the subject at hand. Nothing is too hard to understand, no matter how much knowledge you have before reading. The author did a fantastic job in communicating complex topics in a digestible, easy to understand way for those of us readers who aren’t well versed with physics.
And I just loved the little dive into linguistics & science communication! Great reminder for those of us working in science communications.
I am looking around with different eyes & understanding since finishing. I always love to walk away from a book with new knowledge & information to ponder.

If you want to learn more about river otters, read this!
This book was a lovely deep dive into the world of river otters in the UK told by a passionate and knowledgeable naturalist. I learned a lot of interesting facts about river otters & countries I have never been to. The writing is vivid and I felt like I was on the journey to find wild otters with the author, covered in mud and cold from rain. The search for otters takes dedication and I really appreciated how the author illustrates this. I am someone who loves to watch wildlife and can relate to these journeys. I love how the author shows the ”behind the scenes” of wildlife watching that many aren’t aware of since documentaries & photography can’t adequately show that! Whale watchers often joke that it should be called “whale finding” instead of watching for the same reasons this author illustrates searching for otters.
I also love how the otter is such a resilient species and how the author weaves conservation into the journey.
My one downside to this book is that it was quite slow and sluggish to get through, but overall enjoyable & informative. Just took some time to get through.

This book has found itself on the top of my list of favorite ocean books. Wow! Phenomenal read. “At Every Depth” takes the reader through different ocean habitats and ecosystems, highlighting specific species that are threatened while not making the reader lose hope. It is incredibly informative and insightful, sharing about issues in the intertidal, to the Arctic, to the deep sea. “At Every Depth” stands out from others through sharing and highlighting the Indigenous people around the globe who are essential to saving the ocean but have historically been left out of conservation.
This book doesn’t shy away from pointing out the harms that Western science and conservation have done to Indigenous people, culture, and the environment. The stories highlight how important Indigenous knowledge and culture are to protecting marine species and ecosystems. ”At Every Depth” talks about the many aspects of Western conservation that leaves Indigenous people out of the conversation, from Marine Protected Areas to aquaculture. This is so critical for people who want to help the ocean to be aware of and work to change.
I also loved the flow of the book and what ecosystems/issues that the author chose to highlight. They were incredibly powerful and informative, at times emotional enough that I actually cried! Not just once, but twice. Not sad tears but hopeful tears.
I can’t wait to get my hands on a physical copy of this book so I can re-read it to highlight and bookmark information I’d love to be able to turn back too or relay to others.
