introvertdaydream's Reviews (621)

I am quite mixed with this reading and it is always the kind of review that I have found the most difficult to write … I will concentrate on the positive points and also the negatives one.

Here we will follow the life of Shelley Stone, she is in the head (or almost) of a company in the heart of Silicon Valley, she lives only to work, without a break,… Yet she is married and has two children. Her husband also in the heart of a large company, works a lot. But he would be fine without it. Their children are therefore most of the time entrusted to nannies.

One day they are on vacation, finally, if we can call it a holiday since they do not really quit their cell phones, and their little girl disappears. This part has quite irritated me, because both parents do not drop their phones to find her, weird no ?! … In short, everything is arranged, she is found safe, even if the circumstances are still odd.

Then, Shelley will meet a young woman, who is not without reminding herself, younger. Odd, she has the same first name, the same last name too, … She will try to understand this situation while trying not to sink into the heart of his work.

In short, I liked the start, despite the annoyance haha, I liked the style/writing of the author, pleasant and easy to read. But the further I went in the story, the more I completely disinterested myself. Too many technical terms, immersion in her company that is I admit something that does not fascinate me at all, even if I like new technology, here all this bothered me a lot.

I didn’t like the turn of the story after half of it, and the end was quite bad… In short, I will not remember this book for very long, and I have a little trouble advising you to read it!

I was attracted by the summary, a theme that immediately appealed to me. A little sister with psychopathic tendencies that promised some chills… But not at all!

Only the last part of the book was interesting, the rest was really boring …

We follow a brother and his sister Rosa from the first pages of the book, and from these first pages, we begin to discover of what Rosa is capable and all the horrors she has already committed … If the novel had continued like this it could have been a very nice one.

Alas that was not the case.

Their move into the city of New York, we will discover their new friendship, the multiple questions Che may have about his sister and that’s it. ..

Then towards 2/3-3/4 of the book, it finally becomes interesting. Rosa begins to manipulate some things, people. The end can be surprising, but I admit to have found it a little too big to be believable.

In short, you’ll understand I’m disappointed by this story that I thought a great potential at first… shame!

I admit I read this book because of the cover that I adore! The colors, the chair a little baroque … but the summary also convinced me, and…….. I really liked this reading!

A young adult thriller full of action and revelations. Even if few twists didn’t surprise me I really enjoyed the universe.

Greer is a student at the prestigious school: S.T.A.G.S., where many (if not 100% of students) are rich children! A privileged education that Greer managed to join thanks to a scholarship. She has very few friends, in fact none, and has a hard time feeling good about this place.

One day she receives an invitation from the “Medievals” who invite her to spend the weekend with them. Her roommate encourages her to accept this invitation and tells her that she can hope to become a “Medieval” too!

I quickly explain what “Medieval” means exactly: it is a student group (with Henry de Warlencourt at the head of this group), highly respected by the school (students, teachers) who reign over the school. They are sons and daughters of very rich families, they are totally against the new technologies and thus ban the use of laptops, computer, internet, tv, …

Greer accepts the invitation, but she will not be the only one to be invited since she will also come with two other students from the school.

The weekend is planned: first day “Hunting”, second day “shooting” and last day “fishing”. But what Greer and her two “friends” don’t know is that this weekend may go wrong, and it will!

I liked the characters, the story is told from Greer’s point of view. The plot is quite nice (a mix of Gossip Girls and Hunger Games, that’s how the novel is sold), and the last twist (that I saw coming!) is quite good too!

In short, a good Young Adult thriller, which does not revolutionize the genre, and will not be unforgettable but which allowed me to have a great time reading.

I really liked this novel, even if sometimes principles of quantum physics are approached (and I am particularly bad at physics) I didn’t get lost in the thread of the story and even reading it in english (I’m French), I managed to understand everything!

If you like thrillers, science fiction, mystery, action, (and physics?) I highly recommend this book! It reads very fast and is really addictive.

A rather classic Young Adult reading, which made me have a good time.

I liked the mythology of the island, its secrets, its past, its enigmas. But also the fear it arouses towards teens who land there. I would have liked it to be a bit more exploited in this book, rather than focusing too much on romance … I hope that the island will have a larger share in the rest of this series.

Charley and Thad are the two main characters of this novel and I must say that they are the two characters that I liked the least. I was not at all touched by their romance it was boring and filled with clichés.

I liked more the secondary characters, which apparently will be in the second book, so much the better!

Charley arrives on the island of Nil, without knowing why, as is the case for everybody. She doesn’t know where she is, or if she is alone, in short, she is completely lost. Then, she meets the “ancient” people of Nil, which have been there for several days, weeks, months, … I do not say year since they never stay more than 365 days. Either they manage to escape, or they die. It’s that simple.

I don’t want to say more because I don’t want to spoil the story with too much description.

Nil is a perfect reading for the summer I think. Mystery, action, romance (a little too much), all happening on an island paradise, in short, a good time of entertainment, which despite its many flaws is rather pleasant to read.

The book is very short, less than 200 pages so obviously it reads very quickly and that’s exactly what I needed. A fascinating story, a rich world, which does not linger on pages and pages!

Yes, I always had a little trouble with big books, I’m always bored after a while and need to change universes, at least with short books I do not have time to be bored! Many will tell me that when it’s too short the story is all too often succinct, not enough dug, certainly but here as it is a series the other books (I’m sure) will deepen a little more this universe that I loved so much.

It’s very difficult to explain the plot of this book as this new world is a little complicated. Basically, if we want to be simple, all over the world, children, teenagers have discovered hidden doors (a bit like Alice in Wonderland). Each door led them into a new world. Sometimes a world where terror and death reigns. Sometimes a world filled with colors, candies, where life is beautiful. There are as many worlds as people crossing these doors.

The teenagers/children of this novel have all gone through these doors, they have all come back too. Alas, they can not return, return to the world that is now theirs!

We will follow the story of several teenagers, in a place that welcomes them to help them overcome this and accept their new life.

I loved this first book. A fantastic universe mixed with some bloody details. Very interesting characters. A style of writing that quickly conquered me. I can’t wait to read more now!

I would not do the description of the book since you can read the summary above.

I prefer to focus on what I liked, and here I liked the writing, it was fast to read, the characters, the original universe set up and especially I didn’t get bored at any time.

Wendy is a rather nice character, which we appreciate quite quickly especially when we think about what she lived during her childhood. This detestable relationship with her mother. Hard to imagine that a mother can react like that. But then everything makes sense.

Wendy and Finn are nice together but it’s clearly not my favorite couple. It must be said that I have never been a great fan of romances, so even if sometimes I find some cute couples most of the time they bore me deeply …

The negative is the rather simplistic plot, if you read a lot of fantasy young adult, the story is not much original, except for trolls! Too bad also that the trolls are represented in a way too human for my taste, with only a few powers, which in the end are more reminiscent of wizards than anything else but hey I’m not the author!

This first book is nice, a good summer reading, perfect if you start in this literary genre, if you are already a follower of YA fantasy you will not be surprised by this book, but I had a good time reading it!

I have always had a penchant for horror movies but also horror books. Until now I was not sure of the “horror style” I liked. After reading this novel, I am sure that it is not this one.

The story begins pretty strong, we are immersed directly in the atmosphere and if you can not appreciate the first chapters, it is clearly not worth continuing because it will not get better.

Here everything is creepy, unhealthy, disturbing, bloody, gore …

We will follow the Morrow family, a family well disturbed, psychopaths from mother to son, no character to catch the other. They are clearly all horrible to their ways. This kind of family that we imagine easily living in the depths of the campaign (I have nothing against the campaign eh, since I’m coming from them myself, but you see what I want to talk!), in the United States (or elsewhere), where consanguinity is not really surprising …

In short, their hobby: capture young girls, terrorize them, torture them, kill them …

Michael, the youngest of the two sons, do not kill them, no he is there to clean up the mess. He does not appreciate all the cries he hears at night, he is not especially fond of what his mother and brother do, but he says nothing, he doesn’t do anything. It’s simpler that way.

The story alternates between the present and the past, during Michael’s childhood. This will allow us to know a little more about him.

Some nice twists, which I often predict but still, and a good end are why I give 2,5/5 to this novel. I am sure it can please many, there is a lot of good reviews on Goodreads. But it is not for me…

I knew Michael Crichton just because of the book “Jurassic Park” (which I did not read, I only saw the movie, like many people I think). So, when I found this novel in a little free library I wanted to discover him and his writing.

I know now that he is a very technical author, probably too much for my taste. We feel that there is a lot of research behind his stories. The problem for me as a reader, I had a hard time taking pleasure in my reading. Too many terms and technical/scientific explanations gave me the impression to attend a course …

And what about the characters in the story? I had a hard time appreciating them, I had some sympathy for Jack, the main character. But his wife, not at all…

This novel is about nano-technology, human knowledge, relationships, future, state secrets, … Those topics that ultimately did not interest me at all. If I liked the first pages of the book I got really bored aafterward. That’s why I prefer to stop my review here, no need to dwell more on the book.

Many may and have liked “The prey”, but for me it was way too technical!

Eleanor is special, it is very difficult for me to describe her, a language apart, a non-existent social life outside of her working hours, a penchant for alcohol (especially vodka), in short a life very very little thrilling.

I must confess that her way of being, to express herself, to act, was really annoying to me. The problem is even after hundreds of pages, she was still annoying to me… Certainly, I felt pity for her, a pretty horrible story, but this character didn’t touch me.

I saw that many laughed, cried, … with this novel. Me, it depressed me… a lot…

The positive point I think is the end of the story, which I had not necessarily considered.

I can only advise this book if you want to make your own opinion! Many loved it, but again it was not a book for me …
