WTH !

I saw the movie few years ago and I loved it. Then, two days ago I started reading the book, and I couldn't put it down. Even if at first I thought the writing was odd, after few pages I was used to it and I enjoyed this book so much. The post apocalyptic atmosphere was terrifying and terribly sad. I could feel the desperation, the cold, the fear with the two protagonists. The relationship between the father and his son left me to tears at the end of the book. Definitely one of my favourite book. I highly recommend it.

I enjoyed this book but I'm not sure I will remember it in a few months. The story is in 4 parts. The first part was my favourite, I was so eager to discover what happened with Bess' baby. I was really connected with her character. A mother who must abandon her child, it's horrible, but it was apparently something pretty normal to do in the 18th century when you were poor. I found it interesting that the author chose to incorporate a real place to her story : the Foundling Hospital, I have never heard about this kind of establishment before, so now I'm pleased to know that it was something that existed during the Georgian era. Then came the second part and I kind of lost interest in the story. The connection with the characters totally disappeared, some situations were unrealistic and there wasn't so much of a mystery, we found really quickly what happened to the baby. It was a bit disappointing for me. To conclude: This is a book about motherhood. One baby, two women, two relationships. It's a good book, the writing is pleasant
