This is the type of book where the author takes a well-known topic and carves out a unique storyline without very much change to the facts. Zusak did a wonderful job of making sure that the reader was immersed into the culture of Nazi Germany without offering up excuses for the people of that country's time. At the same time, the author made sure he painted each of his characters with a feeling of humanity that was not believed to be found in Nazi Germany during the Holocaust years.
I'd highly recommend that EVERYONE read this book. It maybe deemed as YA Literature, but it has a storyline meant for everyone.
