It took me entirety too long to read these individual editions. The story Coates is trying to tell feels so disjointed and there's a certain "start/stop" quality to the narrative that leaves me feeling lost more often than not. I'm not enjoying this series anywhere near as much as I thought I would, which makes me sad.
I received an advanced copy of this book from netgalley to review. All opinions here in are my own.
For me, this book wasn’t one I would’ve continued had I not been given a copy to review. While the writing is decent, the story felt as if it was on rinse and repeat.
The characters basically are stuck in a holding pattern throughout the story until the author ends the story with a neat and tidy “happily ever after.” There’s no true friction or push back from any of the characters or roadblocks put into the plot to cause me as a reader to become overly attached to the story even with the attempt at having a plus size narrator and the added “spice” of an international relationship. Jasmine Guillory is obviously a decent writer, but I would like to see her write something more original in her work next time instead of giving readers a cookie cutter story.
If you enjoyed this book and want more of an interracial love story, Alyssa Cole’s book provide a more well thought out storyline that has narratives that offer readers more action than this book gave while using a historical fiction lens or Cole also writes contemporary interracial romances too.
