The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter

Apart from the 'bloody chamber' which has a marvelous feminist ending and 'the lady of the house of love' the rest of the stories are interesting but i aas left wanting more.

They muddy the standard softness and virginal hyperfemininity of women and girls in fairytales but the overall conclusions leave a bleah aftertaste.

My guess is that's intended. The stories aren't feminist renditions but they take the "disney patriarchal crap" and retell the stories in a brutally realistic way depicting the horrors of the patriarchy.

Wanted more chemistry between Addie & Henry and a bit more philosophical dilemmas.

A very hard book to rate. It’s somehow so close to perfection, but equally as far away.
