Fresh read reaction. I think I need to sit with this one for a while or re-read it but the print book/ebook instead of audio so I can catch the whole story.
Raised by a Serial Killer by April Balascio

It was an interesting read. I liked how for the most part the author stuck with stories that were related to or linked back to her father and the way he was, even indirectly. The author's narration wasn't great, there were a lot of weird pauses and overemphases of some words. I appreciate the research the author did and that she didn't rely on just memory, especially considering the accusations. I hope she is able to heal more and that she can also heal the rift between her and her family.

I remember loving Heartless Hunter, and the back and forth between Gideon and Rune. I couldn't tell you if the back and forth in this book is the same as what it was in book 1, but I'll say that I did not enjoy it in this book at all. It was annoying, to say the least. Like miscommunication trope. It got repetitive. Actually, I felt like a lot of things in the book were repetitive. "Oh, this again? Yeah, yeah, I'm sure the same thing will happen as last time this came up." 🥱 Then there were all the predictable plot points. Most of them were obvious from when they were first mentioned. There were quite a few holes in the story that for reason I latched onto and kept thinking about, which didn't help. Anyway. The book was still entertaining but it was mostly repetitive and predictable.

Did not finish book. Stopped at 10%.

I'm at 10% and it hasn't grabbed my attention. So far, I don't like how the FMC is written. Maybe she's supposed to be really young (can't remember), but she seems a little bit too immature, even if she is supposed to be at least 19 (just guessing the age because, again, I can't remember and I don't care enough to check), she's supposed to have gone through a lot of shit but her inner monologue doesn't quite capture her forced maturity. And then when the MMC, who is supposed to be feared greatly and maybe really strong, is overpowered and snuck up on by the FMC? She was even able to hold a knife to his throat? Give me a break 🙄 Maybe he let her? Who knows, who cares. I don't!
Emily Wilde's Compendium of Lost Tales by Heather Fawcett

Thank you Del Rey and NetGalley for an eARC. All opinions are my own.
In the third and final installment of the Emily Wilde series, we follow Emily and Wendell as they try to regain control of Wendell’s fae realm.
I have to say that I think I would have enjoyed this book more if I had re-read the first two books. This series feels more like it should be enjoyed together, not a book here and a book there. I think it would have all come together more nicely for me.
The book continues with Emily’s method of journaling to capture what is happening, and though some of the journal entries do note how Emily is able to recall so many details, it still left me wondering exactly how she does it. I felt like a lot of the book was also spent more on describing various aspects of Wendell’s realm instead of having Emily go on more adventures. For a large portion of the book, I wondered when we would get to the “compendium of lost tales” part and how that would play into the whole story. I eventually got my answer, but, given the title of the book, I felt it came way too late for it to matter. I also felt we didn’t get much in the way of different tales, and just go variations of the same tale.
I did enjoy reading Emily’s writings, and especially when she would write about the things Wendell would do for her, and I enjoyed reading about her doing her own thing as well.
I’ll end with saying that I was definitely hoping for a grander ending — I’m not sure what — but after considering it, I thought the ending was appropriate and fitting with not just the whole series but Emily herself.

Deep End by Ali Hazelwood

I liked the book but I got kind of sick of some of the tropes, like when it turns out that Scarlett got injured the day her shitty bf broke up with her, and that her shitty dad had contacted her the day before that, and it gets annoying when the bad things align too perfectly .

The story had a lot of holes I couldn't get past (did they really let Faye walk out of the hospital with an injured man, and didn't ask her for his name, DOB, probably SSN, and definitely his health insurance information? Really? 🤨 ) and then there were also a lot of things that were mentioned once or twice and then never mentioned again, not even to dismiss it (sending in a DNA kit. Should've heard back from them in the time Greg stayed with Faye. But whatever. ).
I'm also not a fan of -- not sure what to call it -- juvenile events? Like when the villain falls face first into a pile of poo. 🙄 I prefer to have more grown up consequences, like the villain getting what's coming. I guess it's supposed to be cute or victorious but it's just not my thing.

A very melancholy book. I couldn't decide how to feel about the demon and the angel and their actions or how they were carrying out (living?) their existence. I don't think the book was bad, it just wasn't for me.
