Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins
4.5
I love the ending to this trilogy. So much going on in this book, so much to work through, and I like the ending.
Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins

Much better narrators than the original narrator of the books. Still really enjoy the book and all the feels it makes me feel.

Not a fan of the narrators voice AT ALL. She sounds like an older woman. It's really freaking weird. Other than that, I still enjoy led the book on this 3rd read.
How to End a Love Story by Yulin Kuang

I liked the mental health rep at the very beginning but it just dropped off and was never brought up like two times in very minor ways. I was really, really disappointed in that, and it probably made me not like the book as much.
I also wasn't a fan of how the romance developed. I think I would've gotten more into the relationship if we'd gotten a lot more inner monologues bout the MCs developing feelings for each other and their struggle with that. We did get some of that, but it felt like it was missing emotion behind it. It felt more like facts, not feelings.
I thought the whole "toxic parents" situation came on too suddenly. Yes, there hints, but it felt like it was thrown in our faces at the end. More like a "by the way, this is also a thing" instead of that point being developed a little more.
And finally the excessive use of italicized text to convey emphasis on certain words was really distracting. At the beginning I felt like I was focusing more on making sure I read those words with the right inflection than on the actual content.
With all my complaints, I did enjoy the book somewhat. I appreciate the story of how these two people with this shared f-ed thing from their past are able to sort of help each other.

The Fox Wife by Yangsze Choo

I enjoyed the book though the pace was a bit slow. I wasn't too taken with the main mystery that Bao was investigating but was more curious about his "condition."
Witchful Thinking by Celestine Martin
Did not finish book. Stopped at 23%.

I'm not a fan of years-long pining (or decade-plus in this case). Then the whole "whoopsie i sent the wrong email while drunk" and having the rest of the book revolve around that just doesn't sound interesting.
Hot Hex Boyfriend by Carly Bloom
3.5
It started off cute but somewhere after the midpoint, maybe, I feel like it devolved into the MCs being kind of immature and whiney. Towards the end, the book started feeling like it was on shaky legs, Bambi-style. The writing felt childish, like a fantastical story with ohmigod all the drama that one would throw in when writing a story in high school.
Carl's Doomsday Scenario by Matt Dinniman

I really enjoyed this book. It was very entertaining and funny. I love all the Carl-isms.

Super cute. Super cozy. I loved all of it. I loved the MC and enjoyed reading her point of view.
The Unfortunate Side Effects of Heartbreak and Magic by Breanne Randall
2.5
I honestly have no idea why I didn't DNF. I decided to take a break before actually DNFing and then ended up finishing the book, though I didn't find it entertaining. Its saving grace was that I could listen to the book at 2.25 speed and get through it in half the time.
I wasn't a fan of the dialogue. "Shitass"? "Pissant"? "You little freak"? Some of these almost felt forced, like the author thought they would be cute or something, but they just didn't feel like they flowed well with the rest of the dialogue. Same thing with the mentions of mental health conditions. The way those were brought into the conversation also felt forced and more like the author was just checking off a "How to Make My Book More Diverse" box.
The rest of the book felt like it was slowly going in circles. It made the book boring. On top of the book being boring, there were major plot points that were way too obvious, and it became a matter of wondering not what the solution was but when the characters would figure it out.
Anyway. Maybe it could be considered a cozy book, but it's not for me.
