I don't know many young adults who know who Orson Welles was. As a result of that, it was with some wonder that I picked up this novel. After reading the first few pages, I had decided that I knew this type of story very well: young kid gets chance of lifetime, meets famous historical fiction characters, learns about self.
I was surprised, however, by how honest this little book is. The characters are realistic (which is good since many of them DID exist). The character of Orson Welles is almost as complex as the actual Welles...if that is possible. By the end of the novel I admired, loathed, and almost sympathised with him - which is exactly how I imagine most of the people who worked with him felt. If nothing else, this novel will surely inspire readers to at least take a moment to Google some of the actors at the Mercury Theatre...and that road can only lead to good discoveries....
