I was excited to read this book because I love a good nonfiction title that mixes sociology, history, and true crime. While I found the book to be well written and the research to be impressive, it didn’t grab me like I thought it would. Part of the problem is that I was expecting a mystery - or at least some intrigue. The author has instead given us a rather mundane report of the crimes and a quick wrap-up of the case in the book’s final chapters.

I understand that this book is meant to respectfully focus on the victims and the time in which they lived and died - while not glorifying their murderer. I wish, however, that there was at least a more satisfying look at Richard W. Rogers and the motivations for his crimes. For true crime fans, there is certainly something lacking. For sociology and history fans, there’s not much new information that isn’t presented in other sources. All in all, Last Call felt a bit too like a crime documentary on cable - the kind you leave on for background noise and occasionally look up at when there’s an interesting interview or a lurid photo.
