Taking plot lines and characters from the best of folktales and southern literature, Eudora Welty creates an enchanting novel. I had never read any Welty before I read this novel as a senior in high school. I quickly found that she truly captures the strange and often unbelievable qualities of the south.
While it is certainly not her most famous work, I think that this is a good starting point for anyone who wants to begin reading one of the queens of southern literature.

I've always said that this is one of those novels that you think you know...until you sit down to really read it. So much more than the film versions that have come to represent the work in the minds of most, Hugo's novel is really a passionate examination of human existance.
Make sure you get the best translation for your needs - I recommend the Signet edition. If you're planning a trip to Paris in the futre - definately pick up a copy.

PS - You'll never be able to stomach the Disney version once you meet the true Quasimodo and Esmerelda

I enjoyed the first two books in the Twilight series so much that I waited a little while before I picked this one up - just so the long wait until the next book in August wouldn't seem quite so long.
Eclipse lives up to the enchantment created in the first novel...something many fans felt the second book was missing. For some reason this book seemed to take me a bit longer to get through than the others. When I finally reached the end I realized that the characters had become such a part of my life that I talk about them as if they actually exist! It helps that so many of my students and friends (and family members) have been reading the series as well.
For those of you who are already fans: Eclipse will leave you slightly torn - but also tied even more tightly to your original preference. If you went in loving Edward - you'll find more to love. If you went in loving Jacob - you'll discover deeper emotions. Either way, I promise you won't finish indifferent.
