this book is fun. very much hunger games meets throne of glass - in concept. i would argue it’s not nearly as strong as either of those series (even just considering their book #1s). overall i had a fun time reading it. not a ground-breaking or life-changing read but a good time.

the twists and turns at the end of this book were truly so disappointing. i could spot from a MILE AWAY that kai was the one to kill pae’s dad and was genuinely so disappointed when i was ultimately right. i do want to say, though, that although the twists were predictable, did not make them any less entertaining 🤷🏼♀️ i am a simple girl what can i say. you put a strong FMC, a morally grey MMC, and a slow burn romance in a book - i’m eating that shit UP. and i was NOT disappointed by the slow burn ! the slow burn was slowly burning and i loved it.
this is not a groundbreaking book. don’t go into this expecting it to change your life. go into it and expect to be entertained and have fun reading it. don’t look too much into it 🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️

i actually really enjoyed this book. my love for the characters was/is complicated, and i still don’t know how to feel. but overall a great story

Why was this book 700+ pages? Like why. There was absolutely NO NEED for the book to be this long. The first several HUNDRED pages dragged on and on, and anything actually interesting was rushed and/or skipped over.

Like the first several hundred pages were necessary but SERIOUSLY could’ve been condensed. And any action was so rushed. Like Slade got shot down on Argos and just MAGICALLY ended up where he needed to be???? Give us absolutely nothing when he was searching for Auren, nothing after he was shot down, etc etc.
