This series is just so funny. Like I audibly laugh out loud.
Some of the long action sequences still make me a little dizzy- just not used to the illustration style.

Moving, lyrical, and important.
Carries the same emotional resonance as Patrick Ness’ A Monster Calls.

An enjoyable read with a clever premise. While I liked the academia setting for the first half of the book, it feels a little shallow. It felt like a way to introduce us to the 3 deletists and their targets before getting into the thick of it. I guess I wish the school was given more time and energy- so it could feel as flushed out as the final murders turned out to be.

Bumped my review down a bit. The magic system in this was gorgeous but the most interesting relationship was between Agnieszka and Kasia. If it focused on their bond instead if the promised beauty and the beast retelling, I would’ve ranked it higher.
You know what’s interesting? This stayed engaging through the end but there’s so much I still don’t understand. At the same time, I have no idea what the second book could be about.
TJ Klune always makes me sad. While this book had the lovable characters, whimsical setting, and magical imagery that I love from his other works, it’s much darker and grittier than he’s gone before.
This is definitely a sci-fi universe. And the stories Klune drew inspiration from (Pinocchio and WALL·E) are not light and happy ones. And the ending was pretty bittersweet :(
It’s one of those books where I’m in a mood afterwards.
UPDATE: ok hold up I figured it out. It’s giving Peeta Mellark but with less time for me to process it.

Listen this didn’t change my life but it did deliver exactly what I wanted from it.
“I do not miss the sun, not anymore.”
“And what if I miss the sun?”
“Then I will find it for you.”
