Very beautiful and lyrical writing. I highlighted a lot of paragraphs and sentences that struck me.
But I ended the book only being able to tell the difference between the female astronauts- none of the men. They weren’t distinguished enough for me and not much happened.
A musing look at earth and space and humanity.

Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield
Beautiful lyrical writing. I just wish there was more plot.
“I used to think there was such a thing as emptiness, that there were places in the world one could go and be alone. This, I think, is still true, but the error in my reasoning was to assume that alone was somewhere you could go, rather than somewhere you had to be left.” (4)
“A footprint, once left on the surface of the moon, might in theory remain as it is almost indefinitely. Uneroded by atmosphere, by wind or by rain, any mark made up there could quite easily last for several centuries. The ocean is different, the ocean covers its tracks.” (6)
“Sunken thoughts”
“I watch only movies I’ve seen before- impossible, I think, to follow something new, to find the will to do so.” (30)
“We had never been very committed fighters- bit and scratched and then grew bored, too quick to appease and to declare ourselves the one at fault. The problem with relationships between women is that neither one of you is automatically the wronged party, which frankly takes a lot of the fun out of an argument.” (36)
“People grow odd when there’s too much sky- they lose the sense of land around them, think themselves into floating away.” (40)
“I loved her hard and at a distance, which made it easier to do, experienced brief but powerful compulsions to hug her and almost never did.” (41)
“You think you aren’t able to love, except that of course you are. You think you aren’t able to love correctly or the same as everyone else, except that of course you are, you just haven’t had a chance to do it yet. You’re not special, you’re just waiting.” (141)

I just could not get into it. By 150 pages I figured I would be flying through it but the story felt pretty halting. Every time it hit a groove something interrupted the plot and I lost it.
