The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

My motivation to finish this book was wavering and in some ways I thought it was because I found it boring. But it was anything other than boring.
To describe The Song of Achilles in a word: touching.
A story some may know well, from a unique perspective evokes such emotion that you I will likely be in tears by the end.
I have never been interested in Greek mythology, however this has made me feel so connected with some of the Greek greats that I feel like I must continue in this subject area.
Highly recommend to anyone who wants a love story full of emotion that isn’t your typical YA romance.

I think this book unfortunately falls victim to the hype surrounding it at the peak of its popularity.
It was good, don’t get me wrong, and I enjoyed it overall, but I would constantly catch myself thinking of plot possibilities and being let down.
Despite that, the story remains powerful and unique in its own right, and holds many nuanced experiences that I’m sure all women can relate to on some level.
A special note to think about is the ending words which enraged me, as I’m sure was intended, and as simple as the final words were, they held so much power that it made up for some of the self-made plot disappointments in my mind.

At first the writing style of this book had me worried that I was in for a long, hard ride... but boy was I wrong. I could not put it down from the moment I began to read. Rachel’s implication into the Chain and her eventual destruction of all it had become had such an intensity throughout that kept me hooked.
There are a few moments where the writing seems off, or pieces are missing that probably should have been explained, but that does not take away from the overall experience of the text.
Very excited to see where the writers and director of the movie adaptation take this story.
