A young love story from the male perspective? Yes, please!

All I knew before going into this was it’s about a young couple’s “first time”. That piqued my interest because I don’t think I’ve read a story before where that’s the main plot point.

I was even more intrigued because it’s written by a Black man and from the male perspective. But being honest, I also wondered how someone would make *that* work in a book.

Jason Reynolds published this book and said, “Trust me.” And y’all, I loved it!

Yes, this book is about a teenage (17-ish) couple who have been together for just about 2 years.

Yes, it’s about them being ready to take the next step in their relationship.

But it’s also about everything else that led them to that moment. The way they met, how awkward they were, how they hoped the other person liked them back, and even what was going to happen after their senior year.

It’s about their shared friendships, community, and families. It’s about who you turn to when you have questions about “it”. It’s about being curious and vulnerable, and it’s all told from the young MMC point of view.

We start the book in the present and slowly go back in time as we learn about everything that brought us to that moment.

💛 TLDR - This is phenomenal! This is a book I would have loved to read as a teenager. It was funny and clever, and also reminded me of moments from my teen years. I will absolutely be giving a copy to my nieces when they get a little older.

Well done Mr. Reynolds. This was my first book by this author but I’m now an instant fan!
