How to End a Love Story by Yulin Kuang

I enjoyed the first part of the story - it was obvious that this was written from the author's experience and the part about the writer's room and exploring grief was great. But I couldn't figure out why the main characters like each other besides their connection to the tragedy. The smut was plentiful and hot, so that definitely was in its favor!

His way with words is just beautiful.

Really enjoyed the narrator. Howl and Calcifer were particularly well-voiced and Howl's tantrums were hilarious.

I haven't read any of the Bridgerton novels, but I have enjoyed the cotton candy of the netflix series.

I hated that the heroine started out "pudgy" but then lost 30 pounds so she was more slim and attractive. I'm glad that the series is not havign the actress lose weight.
I don't find anger sexy.
There was only one romance scene.

I really enjoyed the book until 3/4th of the way through.

At that point the Main Guy decides that he’s in love with the Main Woman and tells her so. Only she’s shocked because it’s been a casual thing (that they established was casual!) and they’ve talked about her bad relationships that have made her wary (including the last two where she was emotionally abused and pressured) and it’s only been seven weeks so she doesn’t say it back. In typical fashion, he tells her that she’s an emotional, heartless shrew who preys on men and storms out.

This is after she brought over food to his stressed out family and he was irritated at her for doing so and stonewalls her.

And it’s all framed as if this is her fault.

In the end, she realizes that she is in love with him and rushes over with an elaborate production to apologize and begs him to forgive her. AND HE NEVER APOLOGIZES.

He needs a therapist. And I need a book cleanser.

The first quarter of the book was so magical and absorbing and completely drew me in. It sort of lost its way in the middle but then found it again at the end. The slow building romance was divine.

3.5 stars. Read for book club and despite it being relatively short, only made it through a third of it before the meeting and then it’s taken me another 10 days afterwards to finish. There are some great ideas here and some mediations/mantras worth adopting but it is very very repetitive and ideas aren’t fleshed out as they could be. There are four parts but there’s nothing to differentiate the sections. Her writing is beautiful and the personal stories of her family and her connections to Black authors were the best part.
