I’m not easily frightened, but this really had me shook up in the best way. There was a perfect amount of suspense and action. My heart was beating like crazy towards the end for Coraline, a character that I found myself in awe of more than once. I don’t fully have the words to explain how rich this story feels… it’s now easily an all time favorite I’ll be adding to my shelf.

Oh my god oh my god oh my god oh my- I didn’t have any clue what this book is about or what it’s like when I started reading it, so it really took me by surprise. First I thought “oh”, then “oh…”, then finally “OH.” Man this has my heart all twisted up. I don’t care what criticisms or bad reviews this book may have, all I know is it made my heart ache and that it’s beautiful and real.

I have no words that can really express how much I love this book. I watched the series when I was younger, and loved it then, but of course the book is always better. I can’t believe how attached I got to the characters, it’s been a long time since that’s happened. I felt what the characters felt, and cried actual tears of joy for the love Anne experiences. These kinds of stories are the ones that remind me of how powerful books can be. My god, this instantly became a new favorite of all time.

This story is… atrocious. I love reading fanfiction, I think some can be extremely well written, but After is proof that sometimes being in the right place at the right time is all you need for success. No hate to the people who genuinely enjoy this story, but yea it’s a hot steaming pile of garbage that depicts a very unhealthy and toxic relationship as something to achieve to a generally young audience. One star because yeah, like I said, it’s so bad it’s unreadable, but it’s also damaging. Can we please move on from media portraying shitty abusive relationships filled with red flags as desirable? Enough is enough.

This leans closer to 4 stars for me, but I couldn’t quite bring myself to rate it that highly due to some things that other reviews mention about the writing. Honestly though, it was an enjoyable read and I didn’t get too caught up in the details. I liked that plot twist, and I liked the reasoning behind Alicia’s silence.

I’ve come across so many retellings that just don’t land, so I wasn’t expecting this to work so well. I was pleasantly surprised by all the fairy tale elements and the twists to them. It’s gay and magical, what else do you really need?
