While Bablet's artwork is compelling, especially his environmental renderings, the at times hamfisted writing drags down a plot that falls pretty far short of the social commentary it aspires to. Visually, I don't think Bablet's art serves the pacing and rhythm of the story the writing wants to tell. That said, the story is by no means straightforward and would be worth a closer critique. I can't decide if the story reflects a *lack* of historicism in or simply *bad* historicism. Shangri-La is beautiful, but nihilistic, and I think there are other sci-fi comics out there doing better work in this space, for example 20th Century Men.
