Great world building, but not much happening in the world. The premise hooked me
(the main character can see ghouls)
, but there characters didn't have much depth (I wasn't really impacted when
Matthew died
. I wish there was more insight into Olivia's feelings at the end, how she feels about moving forward and knowing her predicament/fate
wasting away like Matthew
. Or maybe she won't, because of her
dad and being partially from the other world?
.

It felt like the text needed to go through a few more rounds of edits; so much over-description through similes and metaphors (there are some good ones, but they are overshadowed by the constant use of others) and constant rephrasing, made it a slow read (nothing wrong with slow books, but it was just so repetitive). Loved the premise, historical retelling/perspective, characters and their backgrounds and strong relationships, and realistic representation of chronic illness. Mara Wilson is a fantastic narrator.

Definitely interesting. I wish it had been organized differently; sometimes the description of a cult or cult-like organization came a couple chapters after it was referenced. Each chapter could have been its own book. In some sections, the linguistics elements felt like more of an afterthought because so much page was spent on background.
