I really wanted to love this one, however, there’s already been so much graphic, detailed trauma, that I’m having a hard time reading it. It’s so bleak. And I know it’s historical fiction and these traumatic events did happen, but it’s really tough for me to stomach. Just not the historical fiction book for me.

For all the true crime and tumblr kids out there, this is for you.

Really enjoyed this one, made me eager to go pick up Eliza’s debut.

Told through mixed media, Penance is a novel written by an investigative journalist who appears to have hit a slump in his true crime writing career. He sets out to write a story of three teen girls who set another girl on fire, a decade after the fact.

I found it compulsive and enjoyed the look into the weird fascination and obsession we have with true crime and how that plays out on social media. Also, always love a good look into a collective girlhood w/ it’s messy truths.

Enjoyed, it’s worth the read for sure.

Gave it a good try but ultimately found my attention constantly being pulled everywhere else but this book. :/

Ok. But those last ten pages really got me though.
