Love, Lies, and Cherry Pie by Jackie Lau

It’s a very “woe is me I’m a millennial” book down to at one point listing some of the ridiculous headlines about millennials. The MFC is annoying and a third of the way in has not been at all likable. She keeps making pretty rude assumptions about the MMC TO HIS FACE and not really letting him respond. We’re clearly supposed to understand that the assumptions she’s making are wrong but we are completely in her pov so 🤷‍♀️

I don’t mind a mean MC but you have to give me some reason to root for them and if 33% in I can’t find a single good quality about them that’s a problem.

This was very cute and the perfect cozy read to get back into the swing of reading regularly again.

In a series of mediocre books it’s amazing how bad this one is.

Here’s what I know about Gregory:

1. He doesn’t know what he wants in a wife, but he’ll know her when he sees her (spoiler alert: he does not)

2. He’s a terrible shot.

3. He likes food.

4. Despite having eight examples of strong, smart women in his family he just can’t understand the “bafflingly female” characters.

Here’s what I know about Lucy:

1. She really likes breakfast.

2. She has a half assed depiction of OCD.

3. Somehow she has less autonomy than other women in these books which is frankly a pretty low bar.

And don’t even get me started on the epilogue and the second epilogue.

The original epilogue is all about the kids they’ve had and the most recent addition of surprise twins. Of course this is what it’s about because they have zero character traits so all they do is fuck.

BUT THE SECOND EPILOGUE. WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK.  Julia Quinn is so checked out on these characters that the only thing she could come up with was continuing the first epilogue with Lucy ALMOST DYING FROM CHILDBIRTH??? Epilogues are supposed to be happy check ins…

Any way I almost never write reviews so clearly this one struck a nerve.

I have pushed through two thirds of this book, but after renewing it from the library once and still not finishing it I’m calling it. Maybe I’ll come back to it some day, but I kind of loath all of the characters in this book. The world building is incredible and that’s what kept me going for so long, but I could not care less about Ophelia and Thorn.
