Power Forward by Jodi Oliver
5.0
Jax and Cas are such a gorgeous couple, and that opening scene with Elliot and Zach was absolute perfection. Jodi knows what her fans want and it's Elliott! Plus, we get Blaine and Alix’s wedding! By 17%, I’d already cried three times over the sad moments and once from pure happy tears - because, of course, the wedding got me.
Hayden’s ex-wife, Zara, is amazing. I love how supportive she is, and the chronic pain rep, Hayden has osteoarthritis, is handled so well. As someone who understands chronic pain, a lot of his journey hit hard.
I cried so much reading this book, especially for Hayden and his struggle with depression. It felt so raw and real.
The found family in this book is absolutely beautiful.
Stand-out moments:
- Never in my life did I expect to find Ethan Parkes cute (I adore him, but he’s very committed to his grumpiness 🤣❤️), yet there’s one very funny moment that changed that.
- And one of my favourite micro tropes—food play! Some spicy fun with strawberries that had me grinning.
- The hockey cards! OMG. I can't say much without spoiling that
Jax and Cas deserved their beautiful HEA so much, wow, it was such a journey for them to get there, both during their time apart, and then once they were finally together again.
This is my favourite book of the series so far. They just keep getting better, and now I’ll be waiting very impatiently for Elliot’s book!
File this under: I cried in the epilogue.
The basics:
Check the TWs
Dual, first-person POV
Medium angst
Part of the Chicago Thunder series—can be read as a standalone, but I think they’re best read in order
What to expect:
Care-taking
Chronic pain rep (MC with osteoarthritis)
Depression representation
Food play
Found family
Hockey
It was always you
Mental health themes
Peyton capybara!
Second chance
Single dad
Sports
Text conversations
