Financial Peace Revisited: New Chapters on Marriage, Singles, Kids and Families by Dave Ramsey

Wow. I’m not sure why people are still recommending this book when it’s so incredibly outdated…

There’s a whole section explaining this new technology - the debit card. 🙄 He talks at length about buying groceries via check…

Then there’s the whole point that this was the “revisited version” with new chapters on marriage and singles… So my guess is Dave got some flack on the first go around with the many incredibly sexist things he says in this book. So to try and counter that they bring in his wife at the end of several chapters to add her input. And she laughs it off “hahaa, you know we women are all superficial and love spending money.” (That’s a paraphrase that I’m sure is influenced by my views and not a direct quote from the book.)

The following actually IS a direct quote… “Many men are really frustrated with wives who are spoiled little girls who just want their stuff and they want it now red-faced and lips in pouting position.” Honestly surprised I finished reading after that… 😳

The only chapter worth listening to is chapter 21 “Baby Steps” in which he FINALLY just gives you his recommendations for steps to get out of debt and settle finances.

And don’t get me started on how this is marketed as a financial book but is really 75% about religion and misogyny. He believes women are just here to make babies.  He even recommends tithing to churches regardless of how much debt you’re in… 🙄

I never read it so I wanted to listen to the original, but clearly an adult is not the target audience. 😅

This is slow (I don’t know if I could’ve read the printed version despite loving LotR), but Andy Serkis’s narration definitely brings it to life!

I definitely had to consult a genealogy tree (thank you reddit) and a map a couple times while listening. 😅

I am excited to read or listen to Beren and Luthien now as their story was the most interesting to me!

It was a quick easy read, I just found it a little underwhelming compared to the hype.

It did bug me that
in every life except her “root life” she was something *big* - international rockstar, Olympic medalist, philosophy professor married to the hot doctor with the perfect family. I don’t know. It just perturbed me a bit…  🤷🏻‍♀️ To me the messaging is against living a simple, peaceful life.

It has some similar messages and philosophical wonderings as “Anxious People” (which I also read very recently) and I just much preferred that amusing/funny perspective.

This is definitely not my typical read, but it looked intriguing (I typically read fiction and listen to non-fiction in audiobook format).

This was fun to listen to the songs (I put them all in a Spotify playlist called “Pop Science Book” if you want to search for it!) https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4UvhpLl9nAA50f4iEiqf1R?si=k53uVKoMQFuO0ufnNwztjA&pi=u-ur2uauihQb-P
and then read the corresponding “study” after each listen.

It was fast paced and amusing, just not my cup of tea. If you have a science brain you’ll probably find it more amusing than I!

I very much enjoyed the writing style of this book and frequently found myself admiring quotes from it.

All of these characters are relatable. ❤️ I laughed a lot and cried a little 🥹

Please be mindful of the trigger warnings before reading! I know there were points in my past this would’ve been hard to get through!!

Usually the “fake relationship” trope annoys me a bit, but the social anxiety of the main male character was relatable 😬

I cried for the entire last 20% of this book… It has been a long time since a book/series had that much of an emotional impact on me!

The way it just all comes together in this finale. 😭 I too am sad to say goodbye to these friends ❤️

SJM does a marvelous job of tying in so many characters and planning out so many crazy tiny details and plot lines.
Some things I would’ve liked to have seen were endings for Nox & Dorian’s mother & brother. I found the whole interaction with the gods to be a little underwhelming, but perhaps that was the point? That we can hope for divine intervention, but ultimately must take our own fate into our own hands?

Despite all this I still give 5 stars because I honestly didn’t think I could care about these characters so much. I remember when Manon and the witches were introduced and I literally kept thinking “I don’t care about these characters at all, get me back to the main people!”
But let me tell you how much I BAWLED at the 13’s sacrifice 😭
Manon > Aelin to be honest 😅

I have a bone to pick, and it is NOT with SJM - it’s with members of her fandom.

The way people talk about this book online I was expecting it to be BORING and for Chaol to *finally* be a giant douche-canoe that I would end up hating since everyone else hates on him…

To me, the beauty of all these Maasverse books has been people/fae/whatever have big, emotional reactions (like humans are supposed to). Her characters feel deeply and grow and learn and evolve and adapt. I HATE how so many people who like these books praise female characters (like Nesta or Manon) for their healing journey and growth, BUT FOR SOME REASON DON’T WANT MALE CHARACTERS TO DO THE SAME.

I’ve been pro-Chaol from the beginning. Does he mess up? Yes. Does he question everyone and everything and sometimes get confused about what he believes in? Yes! He’s a human being! I’ve certainly done all of these things and I understand him so much.

If you’ve ever felt depressed and unloveable, this book is almost triggering. 😅 I had more of an emotional reaction to this one than any of the others so far. It might be my favorite of them so far - I know that’s a hot take, but I’ll stand by it! I’m so proud of my boy Chaol ❤️

Definitely heartbreaking and a reminder that no matter how “successful” people look, you don’t know the full story.

There are A LOT of trigger warnings here that I found very jarring so I couldn’t go any higher on my rating for me personally.  I very much appreciate her sharing her story.
