One of only a few celebrity memoirs I’ll read because of how unhinged and fun her stories and writing style is. I highly recommend pairing the book with the audiobook because the audiobook just amplifies how amazingly chaotic her stories are- it really brings the stories to life. The audiobook is more entertaining than most other podcasts/media to be honest. Despite all the chaotic fun stories, I just think of how many times she mentioned her clammy hand condition lol. All her friendship breakup stories & friends’ deaths tore my heart apart.
Reading this book reminds me a lot of listening to a friend tell a story but the friend goes on a million different tangents and keeps telling a story within a story. But it was enjoyable anyway because Ottessa's writing skill is so engaging and reflective that it can keep your curiosity and attention. But I was anxiously waiting for the peak of the story. I was trudging through the middle of the book to reach the peak. This book really makes me think of Phoebe Bridgers and Ethel Cain- Ethel’s grimy and moody Americana aesthetic/Phoebe’s grim, sarcastic and blunt attitude in her songs. There are soo many content warnings but I put some of it
As an Inuk that reconnected with her family & her family’s northern community, reading authentic and relatable contemporary Arctic life were my favorite parts of the book.
I do not digest poetry and abstract lyrical writing well. Although I couldn’t digest some of the abstract stories and poems well, I enjoyed it. I was addicted to reading it despite not understanding it truly and fully. Tanya Tagaq is a wonderfully unique and beautiful writer.
The story of the narrator’s children was suspenseful and their story broke me.
Soooo many content warnings that I can’t even list them all so do read with caution
Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

Danielle Daniel writes of the holistic relationship between nature and human so well, it’s one of the strongest factors of the book. The plot line and dialgue wasn’t as compelling but still good. The characters’ internal dialgues about their struggles are moving. I was captivated by Jeanne’s increasing suspenseful twists towards the end, and I appreciated both Pierre’s & Marie’s development towards the end.
Definitely overhyped but decent. Kind of skimmed the parts where the author goes into too much fine detail about nature. The plot line and characters are really well written and juicy though.
