Two sections of this book almost convinced me to rate it more highly. Near the beginning, there is a scene where a woman picks up a hitchhiker. That entire scene, and the exchange between the driver and the hitchhiker, crackles with reality. So many vivid images arose in that scene. Then, there was a long stretch where the writing felt didactic, preachy, and flat. When Morrison arrived at the scene with the woman who falls in love with the twin, the writing began to sing again. The woman's yearning for that affair is palpable. But soon Morrison's writing fell back into a flat sort of summary. The end of the book went on and on and on. It could've ended twenty pages earlier, and I don't feel like anything would've been lacking.
