I loved this book. I finished it in a single sitting over the course of a few hours. I felt a true connection with this story and the characters. The italicized subplot was intriguing and wild at first, but once I accepted it as a second story and stopped over analyzing how the two would work together I found that I enjoyed the book as a whole unit. Ness tells two stories of obsession that delivers a beautiful message of release in the end. I think many readers can connect with this story, and how events such as loss of a loved one or addiction or sexual abuse can be difficult to endure but are recoverable following a period of enlightenment following the moment of “release.”

Also, does anyone notice the two faces in the cover carved out by the trail? Beautiful!
