España no es solo blanca by Afropoderossa
4.5
I highly recommend this book! It is fairly short and seems to be aimed at teens and adults, so the writing is straightforward and clear. Afropoderossa weaves her own experiences as a Black woman in Spain and Equatorial Guinea between stories of prominent (or not) figures in Spanish history, dispelling the myths that a) People of Color haven’t been an important part of the history of Spain and b) that Spain never had enslavement within its country.

a slow-paced, dark fairy-tale with strong themes of destructive beauty/skincare culture, white supremacy, and family trauma. our main character, Mirabelle, is a half-White, half-Egyptian dress shop attendant who is obsessed with skincare YouTube and doesn't have much of a plan for her life. When her mother dies, Mirabelle must travel from Montreal to Southern California to arrange her mother's affairs, and there she discovers that her mother has been deeply unwell, caught up in a mysterious group in the area. I loved the discussion of the topics and I was actually quite drawn to our aloof narrator, but I did find the pacing slower than necessary and wondered whether this might have been more effective as a novela. Nonetheless, an enchanting read that I do recommend.

Really cute middle grade with the vibe of an old-school classic! We follow three characters - a cat named Mortimer, a ghost named Al, and a fourth grader named Evan. Together (but without necessarily knowing it) they try to solve the mystery of the library that burned down long ago in their town. The shifting perspectives and funny quotes (mostly from the cat) keep it entertaining, and the mood is pretty light and suitable for quite young readers despite the potentially dark-sounding subject matter. The plot is very simple and quite slow to develop, but hopefully the character work will keep young readers engaged.

Over 40 hours into the series and still waiting to really care. Or for a plot. Or for the rampant sexism to stop. May return at some point but not for now.
