Overall I loved this novel. I fell in love with characters. This wasn't a novel where you don't learn about the characters. It was about a young girl rediscovering who she is and even after learning about who she was,she doesn't it allow to change her new changes she's made in her life. There was a passage at the very end of the book when Naomi was talking with her dad before his wedding that really touched me and I wish I thought of more in depth before and on my own.
The passage was this:
"It happens, baby. You forger all of it anyway. First, you forget everything you learned--the dates of the Hay-Herran Treaty and the Pythagorean theorem. You especially forget everything you didn't really learn, but just memorized the night before. You forget the names of all but one or two of your teachers, and eventually you'll forget those, too. You forget your junior year class schedule and where you used to sit and your best friend's home phone number and the lyrics to that song you must have played a million times. For me, it was by Simon & Garfunkel. Who knows what it will be for you? And eventually, but slowly, oh so slowly, you forget your humiliations--even the ones that seemed indelible just fade away. You forget who was cool and who was not, who was pretty, smart, athletic, and not. Who went to a good college. Who threw the best parties. Who could get you pot. You forget all of them. Even the ones you said you loved, and even the ones you actually did. They're the last to go. And then once you've forgotten enough, you love someone else."

This passage not only had such a big impact on the main character and how it related to everything she had gone through and felt but my own life. I think about my parents,my sisters, friends, neighbors and myself. We all try to hold on to memories but eventually we start to forget..less and less of our past which at the time had such value seems like such an unimportant matter. This talk from Naomi's dad really had an impact on me.

Beyond this passage the whole story did and I am and will purchase this book. I'm so happy I finally gave it the time of day to read because is worth rereading. The concept of love,of family,of being comfortable with your self and honesty with who we make ourselves is all in this novel. It was truly a inspiring novel. Gabrielle Zevin did such a outstanding job building the characters and creating such good dynamics in this book. I absolutely loved it.

I have been looking forward to reading this series for awhile. So glad I did,I love the characters. You really see juillette grow as a character. Overall a good start to the series,I cannot wait to continue and see what happens next.
