I’m so torn on Wendig. This isn’t an original observation but so much of the good will he builds with me gets crumbled by weird references. April Ludgate and Bunnicula stand out to me here, but there were others. This isn’t necessarily bad or anything and clearly reflects my tastes but something about it rubs me wrong. On the other hand, this was still like 90% an effective novel. It is what it is. Fans will enjoy. Detractors won’t. If you like Wendig you’ll have a blast.
