Good first half, but the ending didn’t really do it for me. It’s such an interesting world with so much potential, but it felt unrealized. The romance was very surface level, to the point where I was surprised this book has a romance tag. Also it was SUPER obvious what happened with the missing egg. Like I figured it out

as soon as it happened when Jejomar was sick and his mom was burning something and crying.

Definitely felt on the young end of YA except

I’m still mad about Fetu that was just mean if it’s YA the animal companions should always live 😤

God I’m a sucker for a fated mates trope (yes that is because I too am fascinated with the idea of eternal love and companionship stop COMING FOR ME ALI)

third act breakup sure but the way Lowe was extremely obvious and then gaslighting for his life has me deceased

Annoying FMC who basically gets a personality transplant 2/3 of the way through. Twists were pretty good, red herrings were very obvious. Also is everyone in this book a murderer? Seems a little unlikely but okay.

A little too much rhyming and repetition, but okay! FMC was a little bland but nothing too bad. Kinda read younger than 20 though. Reads very YA debut imo.

Was kinda more interested in their parents’ yearning over the years tbh. Also weird amount of focus on hoop skirts and I never want to hear the phrase “ sipping kisses” again. Truly surprising amount of getting drunk. Not as insta-love as I expected. To sum up, not remotely historically accurate, but cute enough overall and I loved Mrs Stearns and Mrs Gilpe.
