There’s no way I’m going to give a book about tennis 5 stars right? Right?! This had me on the edge 👏🏼 of 👏🏼 my 👏🏼 damn 👏🏼 seat 👏🏼 with excitement. I had to get a piece of paper to cover the page and read the final match sequences sentence for sentence, because I was so scared of my eyes wandering over and spoiling myself. I couldn’t care less about tennis, don’t think I’ve ever watched a complete match (not counting Challengers 😂). Speaking of Challengers btw, this reading experience was a bit like watching that. The stakes were SO HIGH and the characters so messy and frustrating and I just couldn’t put the book down. Because Carrie is such a “love to hate her” character she was such a joy to read about. I had been curious about her ever since I first read Malibu Rising years ago, and for some foolish reasons have been putting off reading Carrie Soto is Back… and for what? My expectations were low 🤷🏻‍♀️ I thought there would be no way I was going to enjoy a book about tennis. Boy, did Carrie prove me wrong, and I am apparently no better than the misogynistic sports commentators underestimating her 🫣 Carrie is not perfect, nor is this book but I’m still giving it 5 stars.

Also, isn’t that the best feeling? Rating a book an unexpected 5 stars 😇

Such interesting world-building and I loved the whole discussion about languages being a tool to oppress people 👌🏼

Halfway through the book however, the main character just kept going on and on about decoding the secret dragon language and it was so boring that I just had to take a pause. It was kinda putting me in a reading slump. I only picked up the audiobook 4 months later to finally finish it 🫣 (very proud of myself that I did actually finish it).

Didn’t really feel the romance in this either… Like, Vivien and Atlas were cute but their scenes together were lacklustre and when he died I wasn’t really that sad? (It’s also so obvious that he’s going to come back in the next book 🙄 (if he doesn’t please tell me because I’m not sure I’m even gonna read the sequel 😅)).

I also got really fed up with Vivien just refusing to understand she is working for an oppressive regime and the rebellion is NOT the enemy. Like, I get she’s only 17 but the girl speaks a hundred languages? Surely she can do some critical thinking too? 🙃

Heb weer genoten van dit nieuwe deel in de serie, maar mijn god wat heb ik me ook groen en geel geërgerd aan zelfmanipulatie-koningin Iris 🫣😂

This was so much fun! Magnus reminded me of Anthony Bridgerton 😅 Trying so hard to be the perfect gentleman, meanwhile harbouring loads of pent-up emotion and desire 👌🏼 I love to see a man suffer a little 😂

Conor fucking Harkness, the king of self-chastisement 💀 when I tell you this man was testing my patience… Unfortunately shouting ‘Just get over yourself!!’ at your book doesn’t do shit 😂
