the author seems to get off on making the main characters life as miserable as possible, and making all the characters connected to him enablers. The message that there is someone “too broken to fix” is fucked up. There can always be healing if you’re willing to work for it. Survivors of abuse and rape often go on to live beautiful and meaningful lives. Every gay character in this novel is literally a rapist, with the exception of one who is just a meth addict, ableist, asshole. This is not the great gay novel, it’s trauma porn from someone who has no education or training in mental health or trauma recovery.
