After finishing this book, I had so many emotions. While writing this review, I feel sadness for Echo, the main character of this story and author of this book, and also other black women who have to deal with the hardships that come with living in White America. I also feel anger, because I know the system was not set up for people like Echo, or me, to thrive. While I did not grow up in the same situation as Echo, I know how it is like to feel isolated. As a black female, I have attended predominately white institutions a majoring of my life. At times I felt like I did not fit in, but around other Black people, this feeling remained. I also know how it is like to feel depressed at a young age. Whenever Echo would float to the ceiling, it reminded me of my panic attacks. Like Echo, I have also felt ugly because my skin and hair do not fit society's definition of "beautiful".

I really loved this book. I wish every black girl could read this book. Growing up, I always wanted to be able to produce magic, so I can make my life and everybody's life around me better. But from reading this book, I know that I already have the ability to create magic, even if I am not the typical "wizard" as displayed in Harry Potter, a series that instilled my love for reading. This was probably my favorite book of the year so far. I loved Echo Brown's use of magical realism because it made it feel like there is magic all around us. From her mom to Mrs. Delaney, she was surrounded by magic women who are wizards. These women reminded me of women in my life who may also be wizards, and have created miracles in my own life.

This book was probably my favorite of 2020, so far. I am truly grateful for this book making me feel like I am a wizard after all.

I loved this book! It is not every day that you see main characters who are minorities. I liked how Samson and Rhi’s relationship didn’t seemed rushed, like in some other books. They initially met in order to hook up, but throughout the story you could see their relationship blossom. I also loved Rhi! At times, I feel like female main characters can be too dependent on the male characters, and that often their decisions are heavily influenced by their romantic interests. Rhi tried her best to not let her feelings for Samson not affect her work life. However, this at times made her feel unlikeable because it seemed like she worried more about her work life than her budding relationship. In then end, I felt like we saw a new side of Rhi. She finally started putting her personal relationships above her work and was able to start a serious relationship with Samson.

While I loved this book, there were some loose ends that I wish were tied up better. I wanted to know why Peter ended up stepping down as CEO. While I am assuming it was because of all of the allegations, I feel like he would be the type of person to get nasty and try to paint a bad picture of the victims. I also thought it was random how Chris popped up out of nowhere and asked Annabelle on a date. Annabelle did say they had history, but I just thought it was weird to add this part into the story. I also want to know what ends up happening with Swype, Crush and Matchmaker since William and Peter stepped down, and Rhi turned down the offer. I am hoping these details are given in the next book in the series, but we will see.

I think this is my favorite Jasmine Guillory novel! I really liked Maddie and Theo’s relationship development, even though it seemed very rushed at the end. At first they did not seem very compatible, as they both seemed like pretty stubborn and stuck-up people. I feel like a lot of relationships in novels go for an “opposites attract” approach, but I liked how they seemed very similar to each other without them noticing it themselves.

I spent a lot of time wondering when they would realize they both had feelings for each other. While I did say the ending felt “rushed”, it was because it felt like they went from “friends with benefits” to “i love you so much” in a matter of seconds. There were signs that they were getting feelings for each other throughout the storyline, but I wish they could have expressed it more throughout in order to make the ending seem more organic.
