I don’t even know what to say. This was hard to stomach but beautifully written, easy to forget it’s not actually an autobiography. I knew 100 pages in this was a 5 star read.
It would be easier to check off the content warnings not applicable, but I’d recommend this book to everybody. I’ll be thinking about it for a while.

Really enjoyed Atwood’s writing style. No, Offred isn’t likable nor is she that concerned about the regime she lives under and how others who aren’t white or privileged enough to offer something to it may be affected. I honestly wouldn’t expect anyone in her situation to be. This isn’t an all-encompassing tale of how extremism and misogyny in power could damage a nation, I see it as a cautionary tale of the indifference of white people.

I really enjoyed Allende’s storytelling and the audiobook narration. It’s hard to say that a story detailing 70 years of family/national history is fast-paced, but there is so much detail and weaving of storylines that I couldn’t stop listening even with how often I’d have to rewind. There are many offensive/disturbing elements of the plot that I attributed to the deep flaws of its characters, but this was a really unique perspective on a history I knew nothing about.

Loved loved loved the writing style and weirdness. The twisting of Noemí’s reality with her dreams had me pleasantly confused, and I thoroughly enjoyed the imagery even though some of it was very grotesque. The way it ends is like ok 👍🏻 I love that Moreno-Garcia thanks her mom for letting her watch scary movies and read scary books as a kid because I’m always thinking about why there were/are so many scary books for kids.

This was a fun read- the romance is cheesy but cute, and the most interesting parts are in the death and dying and grief. (Joe is the main character in my heart) Very cool concept for a book and I learned a bunch of words here they are: insouciantly, aspersions, assuage, enfeebled, bedecked, incontrovertible, indolent, petard, timorous, tacit, cocksureness.

I love the idea of this book but it got to a point where I felt too stupid to continue reading tbh. Like I didn’t know any part of what was going on anymore so I had to give up. I loved the religious allegories and niche references I could understand. I’m sorry to the trans gods 🙏🏻

Super interesting read! Very raw and honest. Evaristo created a complex web of characters each with very dynamic and unmistakable inner monologues and belief systems and lives. Loved how all of their stories tied together even in small ways and am honestly in awe of the writing. I mainly listened to it as an audiobook and would highly recommend!
