I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou
5.0
I started reading this book in 8th grade but it's slow pace lost me. Now, as an adult I see that "slow pace" as meter. Angelou's words are poetic, crafted and intentional. She paints each chapter in your mind's eye. She uses beautiful (if archaic) words that somehow seem perfect against the backdrop.
This book is what writers should aspire to. It will enrobe you and sink into the cracks of your mind.
It's a pity I waited so long to finish this book but the added years gave me an appreciation I wouldn't have had at 13.

The Paris Wife by Paula McLain
2.0
I felt nothing for any of the characters in the book, least of all the main character who came across as a sort of helpless romantic simpleton. Despite the fact that she had reservations about her marriage and husband, she forged forward knowingly with no spine. Any answer Ernest gave went unchallenged in an era where women spoke up for themselves. She gave herself completely to him and even when perturbed by his choices, she didn't push, didn't stand up for herself. Even in the end when her best friend boldly comes into her marriage bed and makes love to her husband just inches away she turns a blind eye.
What didn't help was the writers book report style of writing "in 1928 we went here and had dinner here with Scott and Zelda..." It came across as a fictionalized research paper.
Frankly, this book perturbed me. I hope the real Hadley was a much smarter woman.
