The pattern I’m forming. Buy a beautiful cover with a beautiful black person on it. Making younger me happy. Contents are for younger me but older me is over YA/school/competition settings. Not this book’s fault but I couldn’t get into it. Not knocking YA but the tropes are just stale for me. Special power lead/competition/puppy love drama/avenge a parent etc. Excited for the generation growing up with these books! But for me it’s hard to want to go back fifteen years even in a fantasy setting.

Just too YA for me in a way I can’t explain well. School competition setting just doesn’t do it for me. I didn’t like that she was high school age in college. Just make it all college age people? I feel like a romance was developing that I did not care to see play out. Again I wanted to like this! I feel bad I’ve DNF’d so many beautiful black centered stories with gorgeous covers to boot. But this did not grip me. Didn’t even look up the ending on this one.

Too slow for me. And I didn’t check content warnings. Thankfully stopped before reaching that part.

I tried. But I don’t like YA set in high school. And I need to stop reading it and expecting that to change. The cover was so gorgeous I couldn’t resist. But I did not like this. I already lived this and nothing about it was mind blowing even though it’s relatable.

Cover buy that I wanted to love. Did not need the Sawyer POV. Don’t care about the ghost powers. Hate the high school setting. I should just give up on any books set primarily in high school. Not the book’s fault it’s just so boring to me. I didn’t like it when I went, and I don’t care about it now. I care enough to read a spoiler synopsis but not enough to read the book.
