i was excited for this book because i liked spinning out but i couldn’t with this book at the last 40%. i actually didn’t mind the plot, wasn’t my favorite but i liked the character dynamic. and the we find out grace’s ‘mistakes’ and dark past. aka she was taken advantage of at 13 by 17 yo guys and she was a slut because she has a body count of 6 at 19 yo. i can’t describe how infuriating this is. people kept calling her trauma a mistake like she wasn’t a child that could consent to these actions, like no she was sexually assaulted. forgiving olivia immediately after grace finds out olivia lied to chris, like what? i don’t know there was a certain point where i couldn’t accept this could be somewhat believable or even the way grace’s ‘past’ was handled.

my first read of Mariana Zapata and if her other books are like this, she may become one of my fave authors.

the definition of slow burn is this book. some of my favorite tropes: grumpy/sunshine, forced proximity, one has always secretly loved the other. it just doesn't get better. one of my favorite scenes is when Aiden loses the game and she goes to the family room wondering if he even wants her their and then he sees her and the relief in his eyes and he kisses her!!! i mean pls kill me now that was so cute and wholesome, so feel good. another is when he is actually at her marathon run and she didn't know like how sweet! they both don't want to reveal their feelings and either be rejected or make this situtation more than what it actually is and as it's only Vanessa's point of view we only see her struggle but i wish we got a few chapters in Aiden's pov

okay listen.

i really liked this book and the fact that jordan and pike had some sort of spark before they knew who each other were, even if it's cliche it felt more organic in their relationship.
the fact that pike sat there while his son was the absolute worst boyfriend ever (except he didn't know his son was cheating) and didn't do shit about it kinda bothered me but whatever cole wasn't the best boyfriend to begin with.

also may i say the awful boyfriend that cole was, was superb, very realistic, 10/10 authenticity. this man cheated while this girl was at work, was doing the chores he's supposed to do, and after she paid to fix his car but he barely helped fix hers, and then said i'm never around because you make me feel like im not good enough. like idk that sounds like a you problem, maybe become a better person???

but this also perfectly sets up why jordan likes pike, he is a guy that makes his own way, can clean up after himself and doesn't blame others for his mistakes. like he is a responsible adult and jordan feels she needs that (we all need that) and she finds it in her ex's dad and i can't blame her lol.

when i finished this book, i wanted to read it again immediately.

first of all, the fact that this takes place over several years *chef's kiss*
also that when he went off to russia and then she was married again lol
he's a crooked FBI agent, absolutely love
has an obsession with the number three and is found throughout the book
but that he makes an exception for her
not enemies but almost rivals but not really
we meet them at their second interaction but gianna thinks it's their first so we think it's the first until she finally remembers their first interaction that was AT HER FIRST WEDDING
her technicalities to cop around lying and his need for control
ugh andromeda
love is an obsession
the focus on eyes through the book

this book is so well written and the romance is that much better because of it
