Did not finish book. Stopped at 14%.
im sorry. but its just so boring. ive read the reviews and spoken to my friends who have also read this book, and it seems to be the agreement that the book doesnt truly get interesting until the last little bit. and i just cant do that. i need a book to get me interested at the beginning or im not finishing it. we're lucky i read more than 10 pages. i tried, i truly did. i got myself hyped through reviews, the summary, all of it. i tried so so hard to get into it. but i just couldn't. theres just too many words and not enough substance behind those words.

i really liked the book. honestly. Leigh really has a way of keeping me on my toes here and i can't wait for the next one. I found myself literally adoring Base and Barry. like, those are my two comfort characters right now with this series. I did not expect to love Base as much as i do, but he grows on you. I absolutely loved the book so much. The flashbacks had me in my feels though. I would be sitting there reading at work and be on the verge of tears. They did very well of painting Kade and Stacey's relationship before disaster stuck and made it all the more heartbreaking. it had it's issues and Chris still exists, unfortunately, but overall, I really liked it.

now, the version i had (kindle) had a few grammar issues that had me laughing. so. those are there. I also very dislike the phrase "morning wood" and i just. no. i saw it in the first book and hoped it would never be said again, but it did. i really hope it doesn't get said in the last one. but other than that, i have no major complaints

it was. interesting. to say the least. i don't know why i read this book. i didn't particularly enjoy the first one. this one was better? somehow? i dont know. my brain is just kind of. meh. abou  this book. no thoughts. just confusion. but i was never bored at least. so theres that. you're definitely not gonna be bored.

here is a random annotation i made with zero context. take it as you will:

Definitely kept me hooked. I jave issues finishing books, so the fact i finished this, says a lot. but I read it on Kindle, which helped. I wanna say my only complaint is that the characters gave me whiplash with emotions. like, their moods would change just like that within like, a page and their problems were never worked out, just circled around. like a never ending cycle. I also never want to hear the phrase "Morning wood" ever again.

Okay! Where to start? This book was absolutely amazing. I felt so connected and in love with the characters so quickly. It had that sense of having a blanket wrapped around you. It made me feel happy and sad all the same. Every time Myla talked I swear I was laughing. Niko made me felt safe. Wes made me irritated in a 'I want the best for you' way. August made me feel seen. Jane made me feel protected. Every character made me feel something. Once I started reading and had no interruptions, there was no stopping me in reading this. It kept me interested from start to finish. I also loved that the main character was chubby. It made me so happy to see her body praised and appreciated by someone. To have someone see a chubby girl and still see her as a goddess. Absolutely adored this book. Definitely a new favorite!

the actual story was decent. I'm gonna be honest, I'm writing this review like, 2 years after reading it because I forgot to. I can't remember much about it, mostly because not a whole lot made an impact on me. I liked the inclusion of a wlw relationship that wasn't just two lesbians, honestly, we need more of that. a lot of people forget that bi women, pan women, anyone under that umbrella and even unlabeled women exist and can also love women.
The ending was legit terrible though. like, an ending is supposed to tie up loose ends, but it just ended with frayed edges. not a huge fan of that one

definitely brought in queer culture, made it more relatable. although, certain relationships felt a bit forced and out of no where. the book was fun, but it also had points where I very much considered dropping it. it's a decent read, but probably not something I'll read again.

so, as a genderfluid person, this book very quickly became a comfort book to me, even before I realized I was genderfluid. the romantic relationship is adorable, but I like how it also focuses a lot on Riley, their struggles, their internalized issues, and their friendships. It's a book that I can and have read multiple times just because it makes me feel safe. despite this book having very heavy topics, it's strangely comforting.
