The most poignant, honest, and heartbreaking love stories I've ever read. Would I call it romantic? No, it's more complicated than that. I also have mad love for Brett Ashley, the female protagonist. So many of Hemingway's other women characters are weak or whiny, but Brett is a force to be reckoned with.

I just finished this book, and it's a great book for my research project. It gave me a solid understanding of African-American journalism in the 1940s and 1950s and prompted a lot of questions for my further reading.
