The Vampire Lestat by Anne Rice

If you've read my other reviews of Anne Rice books, you'll know that she frustrates me with her inability to write and ending, and this is no different. I read this book before the third in the trilogy had been completed, so I was frustrated, angry, mad! when I reached the end and it didn't end. Not fair to leave it with a cliff hanger. NO! You start a book, you have to finish it. Draw us into the next one, but don't leave me wondering what comes next, especially when I don't have access to the next book! Very angry when I finished this one.

There are parts of this book that are intriguing, there are parts of this book that drag. Parts of it were riveting. Ms. Rice could have done with a bit more editing, however, all said, I did like this book. The one thing that irritates the life out of me with books by Anne Rice - she doesn't know how to write an ending. And this is no exception. I read this on the advice of a friend, and I remember asking how it would turn out (because I was so afraid of being disappointed). And I was. The history of the witches was very interesting, even when the story stopped to jump into the backstory. This could easily have been two books. The bottom line? I liked it enough to pick up the sequel - Lasher.
The Temporary Wife/A Promise of Spring: Two Novels in One Volume by Mary Balogh

I loved The Temporary Wife (I think I reviewed that separately), and I have to say A Promise of Spring also touched me. One of the reasons I read historical romance is to distance myself from getting too caught up, I am removed by time. That wasn't the case this time. A Promise of Spring (while slow moving in some parts) hit a note with me when it comes to "the one that got away." I think most women can relate to the pain of that first love that we thought was so real, only to have it dashed at our feet, and the difficulty with laying it aside when new "real" love comes along. Ms. Balogh covered the emotional spectrum beautifully.

I loved it. Read it all in one sitting. You've read the description, you've seen the other reviews. If you like An Affair to Remember, you'll love this book. Straight romance, compelling suspense/crisis.
