A Strange Hymn by Laura Thalassa
3.25
I didn’t enjoy this one as much as the first one. I feel like there was a lot of just…. Fluff? I zoned out for maybe 1/3 of the book, and when I reread I realized I really didn’t miss anything relevant to the progression of the story.
Also, this writes continues to have huge parallels to ACOTAR, especially ACOMAF. ACOMAF is my favorite book in the ACOTAR series, and in my opinion the plot, relationships, and character development is miles ahead. The Bargainer does have some darker elements, which I appreciate.
Potential spoilers ahead with some uncomfortable similarities I noticed.
Sky sex
Training leathers
Mates
The courts and their names
Changing of the FMC
Night court lords
They were released around the same time too. Strange.

Super easy Romantasy. Fun and quickly snagged my attention.
I do have a little annoyance at the repetitiveness of certain expressions / descriptions. Specifically, “sweet baby…”. It almost ruined the book for me at one point; but I’m glad I kept going.

The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix

The sexiest, patriarchal themes pissed me off. As did the underlying racist themes.
Interesting twist on a vampire novel, if you can get past the problematic undertones. As my first Grady Hendrix novel, I’m a bit put off from reading another.

This book made me so angry and I can’t really put why into words.
It just pissed me off almost the whole time.
That being said, it did have some twists I didn’t see coming, but it also had a few very predictable plot points.
It’s a fine popcorn thriller I guess.

The show actually did a pretty good job staying close to the book.
I listened to the audiobook, and at first the narrator had me worried I would end up DNFing; but after speeding up to about 1.6x it was better.

- Diverse cast of characters? No

The story had so much potential, but it definitely needed another couple rounds of editing.
Repetitive, flat, and the dialogue leaves much to be desired.
If you choose to read this, I recommend skipping the audio.
