This is the second/third time I've read this book and it blows my mind every time.

This is the book that showed me what it means to code-switch in real life. The writing is sharp, funny, and creative; I'm in a teenager's head without realizing it. I love that Thomas writes in her character's vernacular and lets readers do the work to figure it out (this is what I have to do with Irish literature, after all). It was also an important book for me, because I teach at a mostly white college with a few minority students. I feel like I got a glimpse of what they deal with, and I appreciate it.
The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America's Great Migration by Isabel Wilkerson

Exceptional research. There's a TON of information in here, with engaging stories and connections to make all the information relevant. I'm mad I didn't know anything about the Great Migration until the last few years, and grateful Wilkerson put so much work into educating us.
When We Were on Fire: A Memoir of Obsessive Faith by Addie Zierman

I'm not sure if I love Zierman's writing more for the precise descriptions of late-90s evangelical culture, or the beautiful and heartbreaking writing, but let's just say I love this book, and my students do too.

These poems are really beautiful, and disturbing, and beautiful. Marie Howe is one of my favorite poets because of the way her story becomes something the reader can find herself a part of.
