The Borrow a Bookshop Holiday by Kiley Dunbar

Two main reasons I dnfed:
1) incredibly slow. It took 80 pages to even get to the point of the book, and I didn’t like the style
2) the single quote for dialogue does not work well with my brain so it was difficult to read
Wanted to enjoy this cuz I have a special edition but I skimmed the rest and I don’t see it being something worth my time

Franny and Zooey by J.D. Salinger

I picked this up purely because it’s mentioned in Dash and Lily (and it fit a reading prompt) and I enjoyed the writing until it just turned into Zooey verbally abusing his mother for the entire book. Briefly skimmed the rest but just didn’t care anymore
Fireheart Tiger by Aliette de Bodard
Didn’t really like this. I feel like the premise of it could’ve been really cool, but maybe I just didn’t like the narrator? Idk it made the fire character sound like a CHILD so the romance kind of thing at the end was really weird (it easily could’ve just been a platonic/familial relationship and it would’ve been 10x better)

Just didn’t really care for the characters, 29% in and I couldn’t tell ya where the book takes place at all (is it a lake or the ocean??? I still don’t know).
Okay but wait- update. I just like randomly skipped 38 percent in and I’m liking it a bit more? Maybe it just had a really slow start. Will skim read more but don’t feel comfortable marking it as read
Another edit- I really love the ace rep and the discussion during the movie and how it was coming out on social media
Final edit- okay I technically finished it (just skipped some major parts) and yeah it was still eh. I felt like it was starting to build up to something and then it just fell flat

I’ll be honest I don’t really remember this but I know I enjoyed it! I’d be interested to read the novel it’s based on.

A beautiful audiobook that made me laugh and cry. Where the life and joy shined from the page. Will leave a longer review soon
Curious Tides by Pascale Lacelle

This was SO FUCKING GOOD. I’ve been craving a fantasy book that feels like this for so long. The atmosphere that is created is so dark and magical and wondrous.
I loved the multiple pov and all of the characters and I can’t wait to learn even more about them in the future books.
I think so people might feel that some of the plot was too obvious, but I felt like it was so perfectly set into place throughout the book to have the perfect level of intrigue.
This book is truly magic, just the the book the story surrounds. I can’t wait to get my hands on the sequel

No Country for Eight-Spot Butterflies: A Lyric Essay by Julian Aguon

An absolutely beautiful collection of essays and poetry, that even those who don’t love lyrical writing can enjoy.
So many great lessons about activism, life, community, and grief in such a short book.

The Deep by Rivers Solomon
I remember seeing people rave about this so when I saw it was a short audiobook, it seemed perfect. I think the idea of creating a book based on music is incredible, but this just wasn’t for me I guess.
Idk if physically reading would’ve been better, but there are moments where the text switches perspectives and povs that was very hard to follow on audio.
The audiobook just never really grabbed my attention
