Women everywhere deal with misogyny; being dismissed in the workplace as unqualified, being hit on despite politely or not so politely declining, the list goes on and on. For the most part, we roll our eyes and try to move forward …until the next instance.
Scarlett Clarke, a college English professor has decided to take a different approach. When she is not teaching (or sleeping with her grad assistant), she spends her free time planning the demise of the worst men on campus. She masterfully makes each kill look like a suicide or accident, until one becomes too personal to hide. With so many deaths on campus, a police investigation is now underway and the past Scarlett has desperately tried to escape is quickly catching up to her.
We also follow Carly, a shy and anxious freshman. She reluctantly goes to a party that her bubbly and popular roommate, Allison, insists on attending. However, the night does not go as planned and ends in a sexual assault.
Layne Fargo brilliantly weaves these two storylines together to create feminist thriller protagonists who walk the thin line of justice and vengeance. The connection of these characters are a mystery until the end, and even though the murderer was not a secret, I was still at the edge of my seat until the last page! This novel tackles sexual assault in a very honest way and even though there are dark elements, because the truth is dark, there’s plenty of snarky humor for balance.
They Never Learn is the perfect, sinister read and surprisingly, you may find yourself rooting for the killer.
