How Late It Was, How Late by James Kelman
4.0
love love loved following sammy's kafkaesque stream of consciousness. the prose was sooo good (thank you for teaching me glaswegian slang james kelman i will unfortunately be talking like this for the next month), and it was so anxiety inducing (in a good way)
the ending, however, did not wrap up the story in a satisfying way at ALL. the book from cover to cover was so bleak and tense and i was so excited for this big dark climax, but instead it just kind of.. ends? there was no resolution or explanation for any of the main plot points

My Roommate Is a Vampire by Jenna Levine
3.0
3.5?? cute and silly with some pretty cringey dialogue at times and no depth whatsoever, but fun nonetheless!
my favorite parts were frederick being completely at a loss with modern day humans like the do you eat sauce bit really sent me. my least favorite parts were the fully romantic ones i was just so uninvested in their relationship. also why did he only feed from cassie's finger like come on now this is a vampire book

I'm Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid

didn’t love the ending as much as i wanted to, but the journey was absolutely mesmerizing and soo unsettling. from 40%-90% it was an EASY 5 stars, i was so full of dread and could not put this down
All Rhodes Lead Here by Mariana Zapata

could not for the life of me get into this after rhodes called aurora buddy the elf (several times???)
aurora also had twice as much progression with amos until 75% of the way through the book, which honestly checks out because she was written like a teenager this is NOT a 33 years old woman

A Fragile Enchantment by Allison Saft
3.0
a bit of a rough start, but ended up being a very cute read once i turned my mind off and read only with vibes
the first half had some moments that were so atmospheric and immersive, but the majority, especially the romance itself, fell very flat for me. i felt like kit & niamh's relationship development was nonexistent- they had cute moments but the majority of their interactions felt very disjointed and, at times, instalovey. i could not for the life of me connect with them- there was just such a glaring lack of chemistry
i am glad i stuck with it though because this *finally* picked up and became super sweet and cozy towards the third act
do i think a lot of the discourse on classism (especially the resolution) could have been handled better? absolutely. was the magic system and history explained well? not at all. does the driving issue in the story make logical sense? definitely not. but saft's imagery and prose are at times very beautiful, and she successfully crafts a cute, if unsubstantial story.
also, i need the goth lesbian to step on me

Spoiler
- that the prince regent is the only person in the kingdom who knows it's on the brink of financial ruin, even though it was explicitly stated parliament is basically running the country and the royal family are basically figureheadsalso, i need the goth lesbian to step on me
