Heist should be fast paced. It should be mostly actions, I don’t need fighting scenes, but heist book should be THRILLING. It should be 20% preparation and 80% HEIST!!! The characters should be well developed and distinct! They all should be a strong enough character on their own! 58% in and nothing exciting have happened, wtf is going on??!!

I DNF Hafsah Faizal first series the moment Zafira’s friend got killed and she literally didn’t reacted. Like, at most there was a paragraph talking about it and then she moved on to be ‘lovey dovey’ with the killer. That pretty much speaks how I feel for Faizal’s characters. She keeps telling us that these characters are close like family, and this one is atrracted to that one… yet nothing to show their relationships.

Anyway, DNF at 58%. If I decided to check out Faizal’s next book in the future, I hope there are improvements because I truly wish to support her

Technically, this should get lower rating. The worldbuilding and the magic system are a mess, BUT the romance is great. I like the main characters and as expected of Sherry Thomas, she ate with the romance scenes.

Personally I have always been a characters > worldbuilding truther. I can ignore terrible magic system or worldbuilding full of holes as long as I love the characters. In this case, I love the romance so I’ll be reading the rest of the series

I don’t think there are a lot of memorable moments here compare to the previous volumes. I know the reveal for the big villain happened but like… I already suspected Jun Wu from the start.

Shi Qingxuan appearing again is probably the best part in this volume. I love him and miss him so much. I wish we got to see more of him and He Xuan, I want to see if that’s truly how their relationship ends or if there’s more.

Overall, I still like it but it’s probably one of the weaker volume.

I kinda need Ann Liang’s books as a movie adaptation. Like, I have read 2 of her books and I can imagined them clearly as a show or a movie.
Diverse cast of characters: Complicated

Is the heist in the room with us right now?

No thrill, no risk, can it even be called a heist?

The worst thing that can happen to this group of teenagers is getting send back to their parents. No heist story can be good without a serious risk for failing.

Also there are some scenes in the beginning where the MCs are horrified that one of their online friend is actually a minor. Mind you, the minor character is 14 and the rest of the MCs are 16. I’m pretty sure Gabe is the only one being 18 so I can understand his reaction. But they make it sounds so serious that they brought a CHILD to danger, when the whole time the child is just… 2 years younger.

Anyway, I’m ace so I love that this book has a bunch of asexual characters. That’s the only positive thing I can say.

Full offense but I’ll never respect zutara or reylo or any other ships involving the opressor x opressed romance.

You’re telling me that this man is from the people who colonize your own people, not only that but ACTIVELY TAKING PART IN COLONIZING YOUR PEOPLE and you still love him??? Fuck you and I hope you suffer for the rest of your life.

Like, the fact that the author said this story is based off actual historical event in China and the male lead is inspired by unit 731??? Are you fucking crazy???

It’s bad enough if the male lead was some passive colonizer (y’know like if he was a citizen of the colonizer empire or some shit like that) but to be actually participating in the genocide and colonization of your people?? And you had the audacity to not kill him??? Disgusting.

‘True enemies to lovers’ and it’s a fucking colonizer romance. 0.25*

Edit :
Back then, I was too upset to write actual review so let me add some things.
1. The writing is too repetitive and redundant. She keeps saying that ‘Er-Lang’s magic is no use compare to Rome’s science’ in 30 different ways. Not to mention, talking about the colonizer prince’s green eyes every pages, like damn we get it.

2. I think what made me upset the most is because the author literally humanized the colonizer prince throughout the book, especially by the end with his POV chapter. Then ending it by revealing that when she means this story is inspired by unit 731, she actually means the MALE LEAD IS A UNIT 731. Just so fucking disgusting.

3. The author trying to say that this isn’t a colonizer romance because it’s the first book of a series, yet she literally make bunch of Tiktok and IG posts marketing this as ‘zutara with steroids’ (🤮) and how ‘Anthony is the biggest simp ever’. Also even if the next book killed Anthony, this book is still a colonizer romance.

That’s all I can think about right now. I hope the rating for this book got even lower honestly.

DNF at 65%

I probably could have push through and finished it but when I think about how I fell asleep 3 times trying to read this book, I decided to just end it.

It’s just so… boring. Like, is it sexy? Maybe??? But sex scenes are boring if I don’t care for the characters. I don’t get why they feel so strongly for each other so fast. The writing is boring, honestly Adriana Herrera might not be the right author for me.

Just boring boring and boring
