A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas

A solid sequel to book one in the series - dangerous, thrilling and wildly magical. In the middle of the novel, I was really gripped. For me, the beginning and the ending were weaker. The beginning was a very slow build and very nearly lost me. The end was difficult because, to be honest, I didn't really understand what was happening. There were lots of shortcuts at this point, so the storytelling in the lead-up to the third in the series felt pretty tenuous (but why? Because... um... magic). Overall, though, I still want to know what happens next!

A difficult, painful read, but important too. Rape is a subject that everyone really should face up to at some point, whether male and female, YA or older. This book grips you and won't let you go - but it's the horror that keeps you reading. There are very few moments of humour or humanity to lift the darkness.

Would rate 3.5 stars - just couldn't quite make it a 4, despite the very high quality of the writing and important subject matter. This is mainly because I struggled with the ending - for me, there wasn't enough of a journey or resolution to any of the relationships in the novel and I was left feeling disappointed and confused. The fact that the author felt she had to write an afterword justfying the end was telling... it was intentional of course, and makes a point, but not sure it is right for the story.
